NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- While people debate the future of New Orleans' Civil War monuments, one of the statues has been tagged by vandals.

Someone used spray paint to write, "Black Lives Matter," on both sides of the P. G. T. Beauregard statue's base.  The tagging follows a week of protest and debates over the Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, Beauregard, and other monuments.

Also, Sunday evening a group used the rallying cry, "Whites Against White Supremacy," in Lafayette Square to call for an end to racism.  For more on their concerns, click on the video button above.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu wants people in the city to have a thorough discussion on the statues and to decide whether they stay or go.  He says it's an important discussion to have as New Orleans prepares to celebrate its 300th anniversary.
