NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- Louisiana State Police say their work with the NOPD has reduced crime in and around the French Quarter by 40%. The announcement comes as a big crowd is arriving in the city for the Fourth of July holiday and Essence Festival.
One year ago, at about this time, ten people were shot on Bourbon Street. Since then, state troopers have been working to help the NOPD police the French Quarter and surrounding area, although their numbers fluctuated. In March, the troopers announced a plan that would keep 50 of them on the job.
On Wednesday, State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson release statistics from the troopers' work since March.

Edmonson also says that troopers issued more than 2,300 traffic tickets and that many of those traffic stops led to arrests on more serious charges.
