MANDEVILLE, LA (WGNO) -- So you Mandeville folks thought you were the big winners for the day when Whole Foods officially opened there. Yeah, I did, too.
But it turns out, we weren't.
The real winners for the day were the students at Marigny Elementary School in Mandeville. They received a $2,000 grant from Whole Foods to expand their school garden.
Whole Foods has provided the grants for more than 3,600 schools in the country.
But the schools have to prove they're serious about their gardens before they can be declared a winner. Each must show that a third-party expert helps the kids maintain their garden.
Whole Foods tries to identify local food sources for their grocery stores. Providing the grant helps make sure there will be a steady supply of growers well into the future.
